Biography

Jaco Huisman is an Associate Professor teaching on product recycling, environmental assessment and ecodesign in the electronics industry at the Faculty of Design Engineering. In addition to this, he is Scientific Advisor to UNU - ISP for three days per week since 2006 focusing on electronics recycling in a global context. He leads the UNU – Institute for Sustainability and Peace - Electronics Recycling Group and co-coordinates the TaskForce Capacity Building and Knowledge Management of the UNU based StEP Initiative (Solving the Ewaste Problem: www.step-initiative.org).

In these roles he is leading various large international projects, for instance to further quantify the ewaste amounts and problems worldwide in cooperation with key research institutes and Universities mainly in Europe, China, US and the Middle-East. In the past, he has been the lead author of the UNU study supporting the European Commission’s 2008 Review of the EU WEEE Directive. This 2007 report is seen as the most comprehensive and detailed impact assessment and thorough review of options for change produced so far. It has lead to significant changes in structure and focus in the current recast of the European Directive on electronics recycling.

Since 2004 he runs his own consultancy company OsevenfortytwO by which he has given advice to a large number of producers, national take-back systems, governments and recyclers in Europe, the US and China.

Jaco Huisman is the (co)author of around 75 articles and book chapters and roughly 35 industry and research reports related to electronics recycling as well as a member of a number of international Steering Committees and a jury member of the EISA Green Awards.
