Train Toilets are Terrible.

For my PhD project I am researching and designing a toilet, which, I hope, will be a pleasure to use. The project ‘Hygienic Train Toilet’ is a co-operation between Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Dutch Railways (NS). NL Agency provided funding for the first part of the project. The main aim of the project is to significantly improve train toilet hygiene so that ‘taking the train’ becomes more attractive

To make the train toilets better a urinal for men is added in the train toilet. Besides in this wheel-chair accessible train toilet extra grab handles, family-elements (toddler platforms and diaper changing table) are added, so that everyone from baby to grandmother is welcome on the train toilet.

The first toilet which I designed was a ladies urinal: the ‘lady p.’ which was my graduation project (1997-1998). Subsequently I worked for Royal Sphinx Maastricht, the Netherlands, as a product manager and designer to put the ‘lady p.’ on the market. Once this project was completed I continued to work for Royal Sphinx as a manager of innovations on the ‘Best Age’ project which focused on developing an improved bathroom concept for elderly people.
