Dr Johan FM Molenbroek studied mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic HTS Enschede and after finishing this in 1974, he studied biomedical engineering at the University Twente. He received there his bachelor degree in 1975 and masters degree in 1978. From then on, he worked as a assistent professor in Physical Ergonomics at the Delft University of
Technology, Faculty Industrial Design Engineering, Department Product Ergonomics. He was actual chair of the section Physical Ergonomics from 1984 until 2000 when this chair merged with the section usability toward the new section Applied Ergonomics and Design. He received his PhD in 1994 and published this topic as a book ‘Made to Measure' (in Dutch only). In 1995 he was appointed as Associate Professor Industrial Design Engineering especially in Physical Ergonomics.
He was a member of the management team from 1995-2000 of the new department Industrial Design (100 people) and responsible for finances and personnel.
He was chair from 1998-2000 and a member of the Educational Committee Industrial Design Engineering from 2000-2002.
He referees regularly journal, conference articles and research proposals.
He was coordinator together with his colleague Marijke Dekker(MSc) the European Genie project on Gerontechnology (1998-2001).
Since 2000 his current research focusses on Repetitive Strain Injury RSI and on the usability of ergonomical and 3D-anthropometrical data for designer; project PC5 in Ambiton. This resulted recently in the PhD of Bing Zhang
Together with Renate de Bruin (MSc) from Buro Erin he coordinated the European FRR-project together with 10 European partners in 7 countries (2002-2005) that resulted in a knowledge base about how to develop a smart toilet with participation of elderly and disabled, 4 requests for patents and model protections, a pre-productive prototype and a book that will be published early in 2006.
