Prof.dr. C. Spitas (Christos)
Professor of Embodiment Design
Head of Product Engineering Section
Biography
Full professor Christos Spitas, Ph.D holds the chair for Embodiment Design at IDE, and is head of the Product Engineering section.
Prof. Spitas represents the TU Delft at the board of directors of the European Platform for Sports and Innovation (EPSI) and heads its research working committee 'Materials and Technologies'.
Experience
His industrial experience prior to joining TU Delft spans different engineering design and managerial positions in the power electronics, precision machining and shaver industries, with several products, proprietary line-production and testing machines and measurement rigs in his portfolio. He also served as adjunct professor to the faculty of Production Engineering and Management at the TU Crete, and worked with the Institute of Mechanics of Materials and Geostructures in Athens in a number of applied industrial research programmes under funding by the European Commission.
Specialisation/field of research
His published research spans the fields of mechanism theory, vibration and damping, impact, failure, stress intensity and crack propagation using analytical, numerical (FEM, BEM) and experimental methods (photoelasticity, high-speed caustics, potential difference method), as well as heat transfer and condensing heat exchanger design. His field of research also includes custom manufacturing processes, design with macro-and-nano composites, biomechanics and sports design, design optimisation, tolerance and uncertainty modelling for design and, not least, engineering design theory and methodology.
Lectures and/or coaches students on:
In the IDE BSc programme, Prof. Spitas is responsible for the courses: Construction (IO107X), Product and Motion (IO202X) and Modelling (IO208X). He also contributes to the courses Product in Action (IO102X), Research and Design (IO108X), and Business, Culture and Technology (IO106X).
In the Integrated Product Design (IPD) MSc programme, where he also serves as the programme coordinator, Prof. Spitas is responsible for the integrated course Advanced Embodiment Design (ID4175) and the competencies Design with Uncertainty and Technical Concept Materialisation (in ID4170 and ID4175). He also contributes to the interdisciplinary elective course Product Sound Design (ID5612).
