Dr. E. Karana (Elvin)

Assistant Professor
Design Engineering

Biography

Dr Elvin Karanais an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. She commenced her bachelor degree in 1998 at the Industrial Design Department, of the Middle East Technical University (METU). In 2002, Elvin completed her studies with a ‘high’ honours degree, coming top in her year. She progressed onto her masters studies as a research assistant and assisted in a ‘materials and design’ course within the same department.

In 2009, she completed her PhD research at Delft University of Technology. In her PhD, she developed a ‘Meaning Driven Materials Selection Tool’ to support designers in their materials selection activities. She has presented her research at a number of international conferences and has run various workshops on the ‘meanings of materials’. She got the best paper award in the 1st Kansei Engineering and Emotional Research Conference held in Japan in 2006. She was a member of the organizing committee of the 4th International Design and Emotion Conference (Ankara, 2004), Meeting Materials (Gent, 2006) and the International Conference on Tools and Methods for Competitive Engineering (TMCE) (Izmir, 2007).

Dr. Karana is one of the founders of the Natural Fibre Composites (NFC) Design Platform in The Netherlands (2010). Her current research and education interests include teaching materials in design and designing and manufacturing with bio-based materials. She is the developer and the coordinator of the Materials Library: Made Of.. at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft.
